Question & Answer #7
What is it that inspired you to write Mr. Darcy Takes the Plunge?
I had been reading a quantity of heartbreaking, angst-laden stories and craved the opposite, so I set out to write a happy one. Originally titled ‘In a Perfect World’, the story was intended to be an adaptation of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with all the angst removed.
While writing a scene that takes place at the Royal Academy, out of the blue and to my complete surprise, a certain character uttered, “Ah, but the misunderstanding, separation, and angst are what make the ‘happily ever after’ more worth the earning; and a romance story would be quite lacking without it.” Although glad he steered me away from my original insipid inspiration, in retaliation for his unsolicited two cents’ worth I wrote for him a healthy dollop of misapprehension, parting, and anguish – albeit his suffering is of rather short duration.

There is an elopement in Mr. Darcy Takes the Plunge, but Lydia Bennet is only seven years of age in my story.
Who do you suppose runs off to Gretna Green?
Will those characters regret their action?
Would Regretna Green have been a better name for the place in Scotland where couples merely had to declare their intention to marry in front of witnesses?
